Farmers sow crops, nurture them, and after hardships, they harvest them and finally sell them in the market to earn their livelihood. When crops fail due to heavy rainfall or no rainfall, farmers are in soup with no money at their disposal. Their entire livelihood depends upon farming. If crops fail, they fail. Thus, farmers have faith in the MSP scheme. MSP is the minimum price guaranteed to the farmers, at which the government will purchase their produced crops. The rationale behind this was to protect the farmers from the price fluctuations and ensure they get assured prices for their crops irrespective of the market price. In case the market price of the crops falls, the farmers will not incur losses on their produce. The fluctuation of supply due to seasonality, and lack of price transparency in the market were responsible for fluctuations in the market price of the agricultural produce. The MSP is fixed even before the crop is sown, to encourage investment to produce agricultural crops.
Benefits of using JIP payment?
Everything is just a click away. Moreover, the page is available in Hindi for the ease of farmers. This is a great initiative to improve awareness and transparency and say goodbye to old redundant methods where it took more than 6 months for the farmers to receive their sale proceeds of crops.
Below are some of the benefits of this Just in time payment portal:
- Speed and Time saving
It speedily transfers the sale proceeds of farmers to their bank account numbers linked to their names. There is no waiting period. Everything is automated thus speedy payments help the farmers to plan their next sowing season well in advance.
- Transparency
There is no grey area or doubts when the payment status and all other statuses can be very well tracked online through this portal. The visibility of accurate information helps everyone to be well informed and aware of the situation. Transparency is the first step to trust-building.

- Reservoir of database
It will serve as a database for historical records in the long run. Any discrepancies can be checked and audited. The data will get recorded and will be available for anyone’s use.
- Eliminate middlemen
Middlemen will be eliminated, as the payments will be directly transferred from the government to the farmer’s bank account. No one will be able to fill up their pockets in between. Thus, farmers will receive their complete due payments.
This JIT payment portal is a boon, but nevertheless, it may not be used to its full potential because of the very low literacy rate of rural India. Farmers may still be dependent upon literate’s to check their payment status or other records. There is a scope of manipulation here. Besides though India is digitally progressing in terms of the internet accessibility, still the internet penetration rate is lower in rural India. However, we expect that in the long run, this JIT portal will be widely used by farmers to protect their own interests.
FunFact:
67% of e payment users in India belong to the age group of 16 – 34 years. JITpayment is popular amongst the younger rural population.
